Reflection

As the technical communication lessons are coming to an end, I reflect on what I have learnt so far. During the twenty hours of communication lessons, I have undertook various assignments and learnt many important writing and presentation skills. While twenty hours of technical communication lessons is insufficient, I have learnt important writing skills such as how to write a formal email, a good product description, how to convince the reader with a persuasive technical proposal report as well as presentation skills to persuasively pitch a product.

Through lessons, I got the opportunity to mix around with my classmates and work with different groups of people. This definitely helped me to get to know my classmates better as well as to adapt to the working style of different people. I had fun learning and interacting with my lecturer and classmates during these 20 hours of lessons.

Out of all the activities and assignment, I enjoyed the sales pitch activity conducted in class the most as I got to interact and learnt from my classmates. Through the various feedback given by my peers and lecturer, I can further improve on my presentation skills. While I enjoyed the sales pitch activity the most, I also find that it is the most challenging task. Doing a good sales pitch that can capture the audience’s attention and persuasively pitch a product in just 10 minutes is very challenging. However, I believe that the learning outcomes of this activity will definitely come in handy in the future.

Through the final presentation on our technical report, I have received many constructive
feedback from my peers and lecturer. I will work on my mistake and improve on my strengths such that I can become a more interactive and natural presenter in the future. My biggest flaw in presenting has always been my pace in speaking. When I get nervous during a presentation, I tend to speak faster and stutter a lot. I believe that with practice, I can gain confidence and present with confidence.

Overall, the technical communication lessons had been fun and enriching. There are many valuable takeaways from this module such as the practice of good writing and presentation skills.

Executive Summary

As concerns over road safety in Singapore have increased over the years due to a rise in road accidents, rearview cameras are gaining popularity among motorists. Rearview cameras like Garmin BC 30 can be further improved to alleviate the rise in road accidents in Singapore. This report discusses the current Garmin BC 30 and identifies areas of improvement through proposing adaptations to the current product as well as discussing the benefits of these adaptations.

During the primary and secondary research conducted, it was identified that the current Garmin BC 30 is lacking similar offerings by competitors in terms of features and functions. To work on the problem of inadequate product features, this report proposes improvement and new enhancement to Garmin BC 30 to expand on its functionalities so that the product can better serve the needs of users.

While the proposed adaptations to the current Garmin BC 30 through an “all in one Garmin BC 30” will greatly benefit Garmin in terms of an increased in sales, the proposed adaptation has its drawbacks as well. An evident drawback would be the cost needed to develop and maintain the mobile application to create an “all in one Garmin BC 30”. However, as the benefits of the proposed adaptation far exceeds the cost incurred, it is advisable to implement the proposed adaptations to the current Garmin BC 30.

As a result, this report aims to convince Garmin stakeholders that the expansion on Garmin BC 30’s existing features is vital in improving customer’s satisfaction of the product and thus, the sales of the product.

Assignment 2- Product Summary Draft 3

According to the website "https://pearlauto.com" (n.d.), Pearl Rear Vision is a solar powered backup camera for cars which provides the driver with extensive vision of the car’s surroundings. With state-of-the-art image processing of “high dynamic range scenes”, the rearview screen is viewable under direct sunlight while the dark mode enables visibility in inferior light situation. It has a caution system which provides the driver with sounding and visual caution when there are obstructions to the lane caused by incoming traffic. The caution may be in the form of a motion of waves or intonation which becomes firmer as obstacles are in closer proximity. Not only can the rear view camera be readily installed on the car’s number plate, it is theft proof and uses the driver's phone via the Pearl app as the screen.

For these reasons, while there are many similar products in the market, Pearl Rear Vision is a useful product that can stand out from its competitors as it provides many unique functions.

One such function of Pearl Rear Vision is the ability of the drivers to use their mobile phones to control the view of the camera. In contrast, Pearl Rear Vision’s competitor, Garmin, has a similar product Garmin BC 30, that provides identical offerings such as the visibility of incoming traffic to avoid accidents. However, the driver need to purchase an additional portable navigator to synchronize with the camera to view the footage. Therefore, Pearl Rear Vision provides greater convenience for drivers as mobile phones can be used as the navigator instead of purchasing one which sets Pearl Rear Vision apart from competitor’s product like Garmin BC 30.

Another function of Pearl Rear Vision would be the caution system that becomes firmer when obstacles are in closer proximity. This can help to alert the driver to obstacles and minimize the risk of potential accidents. In contrast, according to Garmin's website, Garmin BC 30 does not comes with an alert system which is an important function for a rearview camera.

A vital function that give Pearl Rear Vision a competitive edge over competitors would be easy installation. Pearl Rear Vision's rearview camera can be set up easily without any drilling, wires or professional installation which brings convenience for users. In contrast, Garmin advised users to get Garmin BC 30 professionally installed due to complex installation required. According to a community forum for Garmin BC 30, many users had problems with the installation of the Garmin BC 30. As an important factor users consider when choosing a rearview camera would be the ease of installation, Pearl Rear Vision's rearview camera stands out from competitors's products like Garmin BC 30.

These unique functions offered by Pearl Rear Vision made the rearview camera an useful product by providing convenience for the users such as easy setup, an alert system as well as the pairing of the driver’s mobile phone with the camera. With this, it helps to prevent and minimize road accidents which is the purpose of the rearview camera.
